Following on from yesterday’s post about the anachronistic nature of the term ‘label’, I’ve been having a think about the actual format that music is released in.
It’s amazing how containers can make us lazy about content. The assumptions we make about the nature of music, collections of music, what constitutes a ‘complete work’ etc.
There’s [...]

Rejoining Emusic’s subscription download service.
March 8th, 2009 · 2 Comments
I just started my subscription to Emusic again. Emusic is one of the biggest site for indie music download sales, and works on a subscription model, so you pay for a certain number of tracks a month. I get 50 tracks for £11.99, I think.

Lawson/Dodds/Wood album… release is nigh. :)
August 11th, 2008 · 6 Comments
I’ve finally heard the proper mixed ‘n’ mastered version of the Lawson/Dodds/Wood album. It sounds amazing - Patrick has done an incredible job both of the editing and mixing mastering.
In case you missed it, Lawson/Dodds/Wood is a trio that came out of my Recycle Collective project (which is currently on a temporary hiatus). I’d played [...]

June 19th, 2008 · 1 Comment
OK, one day into the last.fm buzzing experiment, and the first thing that’s clear is that this is going to take a little longer. Twitter buzzing takes a maximum of 20 seconds beyond reading the blog post. You find a link, you twurl it, you tweet it. Simple As.
I did, however, have twice as [...]

April 14th, 2008 · No Comments
Andrew Dubber over at New Music Strategies has just posted a fantastic blog post - Do I Really Have To Blog?.
His answer (initially, ‘yes of course’ but much longer and in detail) is just about the best list of reasons I’ve ever read for musicians blogging.
I’ll add just one thing to it - a [...]

Don’t forget, you [...]

Some thoughts on ‘Free’ methodology and practice…
April 10th, 2008 · No Comments
It’s the big buzz-concept in the online world - the new currency is attention, recorded music can be duplicated at zero cost, so we should all give it away in order to promote ourselves as a brand, and the caveat often added to this is that we make our money off live shows.
OK, let’s contrast [...]

One True Fan - thoughts on Street Teams.
April 2nd, 2008 · No Comments
One of the most linked to blog posts in the last few months in the musical blogosphere is Kevin Kelly’s piece on 1000 True Fans - it’s a great piece of writing, and quite inspiring too.
However, I’d like to get away from the numbers for a moment and talk about this whole thing of connecting [...]
