Live Blog III - Political Innovation Camp, Belfast (picamp)

May 26th, 2009 · 8 Comments

So today I’m in Belfast, at an Amplified event called PICamp - Political Innovation Camp. It’s an ‘unconference‘ style event, with the added Amp-twist of us hopefully taking the great stuff that comes up here and sharing it beyond the walls of the discussion, and running a session or two that invites you to contribute. [...]

G20 protests - a change is gonna come.

April 1st, 2009 · 20 Comments

picture of protesters outside the Bank of EnglandToday I went down to the protest outside the Bank Of England that coincided with the meeting of the G20 in London. It was a multi-angle protest, seeking to bring together the shared concerns of the environmental movement, anti-capitalists, the climate change brigade, the stop the war coalition and those who wanted to see a greater degree of culpability placed on the financial systems and institutions that presided over the current global economic collapse.

Earthhour - Inspiration, collective meaning and the dangers of virtual absolution.

March 30th, 2009 · 8 Comments

photo of a candle burning at st luke's church, holloway8.30-9.30 last night was Earth Hour. The idea was for everyone to turn off their lights for one hour as a symbol of their recognition of the problem of climate change, and the effect of our energy consumption and its environmental impact thereon. (at least, that’s my paraphrase).

Interview - from BassRocket.com (Jan 2005)

May 12th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Steve Lawson has been one of the most inspiring and creative solo bassists to come out of the UK in recent years. His solo albums and collaborative projects have been the talk of the world-wide bass community and have drawn enthusiastic reviews in the press. His latest album ‘Grace And Gratitude’ finds him [...]

Dark days in London town.

May 3rd, 2008 · 4 Comments

C’mon, joke’s over, Boris didn’t really win, did he?
Oh shit, yes he did. A victory for disillusionment, celebrity and the power of the protest vote. He’s not even a convincing tory.
The animosity towards Ken is startling, and he’s largely brought it on himself of late by behaving as though he was born to rule. His [...]

Londoners - don’t forget to vote tomorrow!

April 30th, 2008 · 2 Comments

It’s the London Mayoral Elections tomorrow, and our chance to choose between the different flavours of turd on offer… As much as I think Ken has overstayed his welcome, the idea of Boris as London mayor is too horrific to consider. Not because of his affable buffoonery, but because of his horribly reactionary politics. He’s [...]

Thoughts and Questions on Originality.

April 20th, 2008 · No Comments

Been having some fantastic conversations with creative people of late on the subject of originality. It’s a subject that seems to lead to wildly different comments and responses from creative people, but rather too often seems to become deified or fetishised to the detriment of the resultant art.
With solo bass being such a niche musical [...]

Bruce Cockburn interview from Nov ‘99

March 25th, 2008 · No Comments

Back when I was writing for Bassist magazine in the late 90s, I mainly used interviews as a chance to meet up with my musical heroes. The bass ones were easy to sort out, but on a couple of occasions I used the magazine connection to interview my guitar playing heroes as well, and did [...]

First Podcast recorded… available ASAP.

February 23rd, 2008 · 3 Comments

I’ve just finished my first joint podcast with Jeff Schmidt - we recorded it via Skype, and talked for about an hour about lots of musical things (we both were expecting it to get all political/religous but it didn’t this time - it’s going to be a series, so there’s plenty of time for that!)
Jeff’s [...]

Early Christmas presents - your virtual gifts here…

November 20th, 2007 · No Comments

It’s something we’ve done in a small way over in the forum for a couple of years, but I thought I’d copy it over here as a comment thread this year - giving Christmas presents is often expensive and perhaps almost as often, pointless. You spend ages trying to find something that is adequate as [...]
