Hey thanks for taking a look at my blog and twitter! It's nice to get some feedback that I should just keep going. My rules when I started were to have fun and take it easy, but what's easy is to get caught up in stats! Luckily I also seem to run into enough people who remind me again what it's really all about to balance that out. :)

Thanks for blogging about the smart and sane ways to do things with these social media tools!

Heather,

looking at your blog and twitter stream, you seem to be working it in a good way, promoting other singer/songwriters in your community and around, using your show to build an audience etc.

It all just takes time, and the connecting with people who have too many followers to see your tweets thing is a pain - I've had that a few times, then sometimes made friends with them at an event and made the connection. Either way, always go with interestingness over popularity. It lasts longer ;)

Thanks for commenting here. Nice to have you on board ;)

I get frustrated sometimes because I feel like I'm trying to reach out to people in the social networking world but it seems like I get either the people who are clueless number grabbers, or people who are already so popular they don't really have the bandwidth to notice me. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or expecting too much or if I just need to take more time with it. Maybe get over the feeling I'm pestering people and ask more direct questions...

In any case, I agree with you on the part about talking to people about their lives and then finding out later about their music making it more likely you'll get talked up. It's my stories like that that make my husband finally start to see the value of twitter and think he's maybe missing out on something. :)

Carol - that's definitely one of the great things about twitter. It doesn't demand much time - you can dip in and out without upsetting anyone. Great for a life when free time is scarce and unpredictable! Also nice to be able to handle it on a mobile...

Brian - def. recommend getting the book. It's brilliant. I think you'd get loads from it, given the care you put into your online music-related activities.

Good post with a lot of good points. I'm still trying to figure out where I fit in to all this. I'm not an artist (maybe one day), but I play other people's music on my station.

I think I'll pick up "Net, Blogs and Rock`n' Roll". Sounds like an interesting read.

I've had to be selective about where I spend my social networking time. They do take attention and can eat into practice time if I'm not careful.

The nice thing about Twitter, is it sort of scrolls by via TweetDeck and I'm free to toss in my 140 or just let it stream by.

Some excellent points here. Thanks for keeping it in perspective.
