Thanks for the wonderful post.
I'll try to take your points into consideration - trying to look at my own tweets from another point of view was an... interesting experience.

I totally agree with this post. I think there's a fine line between inviting people into your world as a musician, and posting "had a pbj sandwitch for lunch. It was great." I do, however, think that there are certain circumstances where some artists who already have a large fanbase are somewhat in a position to lean more towards selfpromotion. Here are some examples. @celldweller is an electronic industrial artist who has been around for the past 15 years, playing in several industrial projects throughout the 90's, and moving on to a solo career in about 2000 or so. He's currently working on an album that is released in chunks, with fan contributed cover art. There's a great deal of activity on his stream talking back and forth with his fans about when things will be released, when this or that remix will be available, etc. He's already built up a fanbase from the physical world. They have all followed him back to the online world to be kept up to the minute on everything that's going on. He's not necessarily one to comment on other things outside of his music, but for some reason, it's ok. He's still interacting with his fans, and people are buying his downloads like mad. Another one I could mention is @bleutopia. A great deal of his tweets are regarding who he's writing with this week, where he's playing in the next month, and when releases are available. As someone who is a huge fan of his, I wait for those bits of info. He doesn't post every day, but when he posts, it's mainly regarding his current pursuits. He's another one that had somewhat of a successful run before the whole online music marketing took hold, so a great deal of his fans have migrated to his various online presences. Last but not least, there's @derekwebb. He talks a great deal about his releases, but also lets his fans get a good glimpse into his personal life, talking about vacation, dealing with his children, etc. Sometimes he and his wife, singer/songwriter @sandramccracken, go back and forth with each other, making it very entertaining. I know this sounds like a ramble, but I just wanted to throw some bits out there to continue the dialog and see what you thought. Thanks so much for this post.
